‘It’s a vulnerable package. That’s why we’re here. Eyes-on, two-to-one, double-supervised. We keep the protocols, the procedures; we keep the conditions of the order. There is a system. We are the system.’
Nora is sixteen. She likes maths, Teign with the green eyes, and absconding from her children’s home.
One night, to keep her out of harm’s way, Nora is taken and moved to an unknown room,in an unknown house, in a far-away part of the city. Nora’s angry. She’s frightened.
But she’s not alone.
Ever.
Each year, more than a thousand vulnerable teenagers are placed under Deprivation of Liberty orders, and held under constant supervision in the name of safety. Each year the number goes up, and yet most people have no idea it’s happening.
Created with TBH members and those who have experienced these orders, A DoL House is a funny, unflinching, provocative play that steps inside this hidden system to ask: What does ‘keeping young people safe’ really mean? When does protection become control? And is there another way?
Written by acclaimed writer David Watson (L8r, Housed) and directed by Maggie Norris (Blaze FM and Redemption), A DoL House is a standalone production which examines the lived experience of young people who have been subject to a Deprivation of Liberty order.
