Brixton Rock

The Big House are delighted to announce that for our next Open House Project we are working with award winning writer and care leaver Alex Wheatle, MBE, sharing extracts from the first stage of an adaption of his novel, ‘Brixton Rock’. This extraordinary story shows the highly complex world in which Brenton Brown, a care leaver living in a hostel, searches for his personal, emotional and cultural identity. The novel also brilliantly illuminates the anger and disaffection present in the 1980s shortly before the Brixton Riots. Wheatle began his writing career whilst serving time in jail, books and self-education were his catalyst for empowerment and change. This project is based on our previously used wraparound model which uses the power of theatre to engage, enthuse and inspire disengaged care leavers and at risk young people. We have 15 enthusiastic and excited participants ready to start work on this project in January 2017, there will be a four week run of the work in early Spring. Full creative team to be announced in the New Year.
